It’s tempting to think that sexual violence and harassment is rare, and that it only happens to other people. The truth is that all of us know someone who has been affected by sexual violence in some way. If you have staff or volunteers, the chances are you have a survivor of sexual violence or harassment on your team.
In England and Wales each year there are around 85,000 rapes of adult women, and 12,000 rapes of adult men. That’s one rape every hour, just in England and Wales. Half a million adults are sexually assaulted every year.
In the workplace, around half of all women and have been sexually harassed, including sexual assaults and rapes, sexist jokes, sexual comments, and much more.
Sexual violence isn’t rare, it’s endemic, and it affects your workers. The impact of sexual violence can be severe, and amongst women who have been harassed, around half leave their jobs. Helping workers feel safe at work, and dealing appropriately with the impact of sexual violence and harassment, whether it happened at work or not, is something no organisation can afford to ignore.
